Calligraphy and Illumination work finally on-line
I've finally done it! Uploaded my scans into Photobucket.
http://photobucket.com/albums/c297/VelvetClaw/
This is some of my work from the last couple of years. I've been doing
C&I (Calligraphy and Illumination) for about 3.5 years now.
The Monkey and the Work in Progress both have 22 carat gold gilding. (done with PVA)
The Gottingen Model Book piece (titled - 'wow, some writing' for people
that don't recognise it) (this particular design borrowed from a
directory motif on the Lochac Scribes website) suffered a little, being
written on paper that was a little rough, leading to some strange pen
directions. | | Tuesday, September 20th, 2005 | | 8:22 am |

The Roaming Tongue/Beer Ad
I'm currently laughing so much I've been crying! My friend Dianne, with EDS, has a very long tongue and a 'cathedral' top of mouth coz of the EDS. She's shown me both - very VERY weird, especially on top of her hypermobile joints! I got a 'weird' body parts show one day. Anyway, she's just found out that Garth, who runs an ad agency now, and is her ex when she was in Queensland (I've seen a photo and ye gods, is he cute! They still chat and see each other etc) did the ad on tv - you know the one where the guy is in bed, and his tongue goes on a wonder across the street and ends up at a party and goes the plunge in a ice filled bath tub to get a beer, and brings it back for the guy? It was inspired by her tongue!!! Small world, and now I'm laughing again!!!!!!! Don't know what on earth anyone could say to this, or even if anyone else would find it funny, but I sure do! | | Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005 | | 7:09 pm |
Exciting event - I am going to totally rearrange my flat. My bed is currently in the front room (lounge room), so I spend almost all of my time in here - unless I'm in 'the study', where my clothes, bookshelves and calligraphy desk is. I'm going to move the bed into the back room, bookshelves out the front here, and watch TV using my 'new' and beautiful maroon velvet couch (ie less time in bed, some on the couch - lifestyle change too! At the moment I never sit on the couch, it's just for visitors, coz my bed is right next to it). My art deco counter currently "in front of" the kitchen will be against the wall where the couch now is, with a bookshelf on top of it!!! And entrance to the kitchen will be a lot easier, rather than a ever so slightly tilted walk past the counter. I've measured everything. It's definitely definitely a much better arrangement. This is what you get for having more or less a houseful of furniture in a 1BR flat! It's all fitted in like a jigsaw, so moving my bed means moving almost everything else as well. It looks like the Council will do it for me! Next Friday. Coz I've got 2 blokes downstairs watching me - all the magic words I needed to say to convince them to give me the help (for a few $). (Not threatening, just being guys/silly. One is Peter - he's not really a guy, he's just weird. The other asked me a bunch of weird questions about whether I still had sex in spite of my disability, and whether I had boyfriends, and I've since seen him standing on the lawn looking up into my flat. He's in the far corner of the L, on the bottom - ideal position, so I've been wanting to move 'my life' before summer comes) I just have to strip everything of all their decorations. I plan on doing one piece of furntiture a day (there are 9 that will move, not all need stripping), once I have confirmation. Then, when I have my super, I'm going to get a $400 4 poster bed from Freedom along with my new mattress - I've always always wanted a 4 poster - used to have a homemade one in Prahran. I will most probably downsize to a large single or something - coz of the expense of the fancy mattress - about 3K for the special ones. So I'm going to be totally and utterly buggered, but happy. The back room has a nice outlook onto two trees, and only one flat behind there can see it, with a bit of effort - so it's much better. And the bathroom will become an 'ensuite' | | Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005 | | 7:26 am |
Medieval Monkdom is alive!
It is somewhat to my amusement to realize how much my life reflects that of a Medieval Scribing Monk (in a good way)!
Although
without the prayers and the early waking hour, if you can picture me in
a long black dress, mixing pigments into paints in exactly the same way
the monks did. Only one of my pigments is actually poisonous ( Read more... ) | | Wednesday, July 27th, 2005 | | 9:22 am |

Hello
I'd thought that I'd poke my head up, and say 'hi'. | | Sunday, December 26th, 2004 | | 8:03 am |
I had the most lovely Christmas Day, at my friend Jane's. We started organising the ME/CFS Orphans Christmas Day last year (first Christmas she'd ever celebrated - she's Jewish). So yesterday was assorted floppy bodies eating salmon and chocolate trifle, and having fantastic chats. 3 of my best friends were there. I couldn't have asked for a nicer day..... :-) (I even got Art Supplies in my Kris Kringle present. How's that???) | | Saturday, December 25th, 2004 | | 7:39 am |
(copied from comment just made to Ricky_Buchanen) I think my 'resolution' or 'thought resolved over the last year' is 'ever onwards and upwards'. This is not necessarily in the physical sense (haha) but, from being surrounded by such wonderful, positive people that cope with so much. I can only learn from them, and learn to be ever more positive, and to live my life with as much enjoyment, and as much as possible, regardless of this stupid surrounding of flesh. | | Tuesday, December 14th, 2004 | | 10:03 am |
http://fantastic.library.cornell.edu/index.phpCornell University Division of Rare Books and Manuscripts Lithographs, woodblocks and engravings of the Grotesque, Beasts, Daemons, Freaks, Weird Science, Insanity and Possession. Mostly from the 19th Century. My favourite are the Magic Calandrier pages from the Weird Science section. 1895 - French Art Deco, Satanic and high Gothic. Totally Gorgeous. I'm looking forward to reproducing some of it in my work......... LtlPengy, m'dear, find your daily dragon fix in The Bestiary. | | Monday, December 6th, 2004 | | 8:20 am |
Attention All Cat Lovers
A friend sent me a link to a gorgeous site : http://www.fantasycatart.com/Pages and pages of great cat drawings, that can be ordered as framed prints, light coverings or fridge magnets ($US3). American, of course, *sigh*. The Cat in the Full Moon is my personal favourite! (page 2 I think) Speaking of which, Tommy's eyes are turning grey/green (to match his grey ears/tail), and he is the cutest kitten eva!! He's been purple, black, grey, yellow and a couple of other colours - try keeping a mostly white kitten out of the gouache paint palletes (sp?)! (He knows what a water spray bottle looks like now, that's for sure!) Guernesavien is slowly learning to accept him. | | Tuesday, November 30th, 2004 | | 7:37 am |

Australian Museum site on Death, courtesy of LtlPengy Watch a film of a pig decaying, all about corpse etymology and a very interesting bibliography, including a few books on those crazy Victorians and their attitudes to death and mourning. I've read 'The Mummy Congress" by Pringle, and it was way cool. Not *more* Egyptian mummies, but ones from all sorts of different places. http://www.deathonline.net/index.cfmHappy Reading! | | Monday, November 15th, 2004 | | 7:34 am |
I'm starting to enjoy Morca now it's been a few days since Missy. He really is a rambunctious and incredibly affectionate little bundle. I feel a little guilty for not getting another older, unwanted cat (instead of a kitten that would be adopted easily), but I also felt I'd kind of done my bit for the moment, doing that and losing a girl who was only 4. As a couple of people who knew Missy commented, at least I was able to give her 3 years of happiness, whereas she would have been put down years ago, otherwise. That is a huge comfort to me. An enormous light went on for me last night, much to my relief. Morca won't use the litter tray coz there is too much litter in it (poor little guy is practically knee deep). A smaller tray with just a little litter should solve (oh, I pray) kitty-poo flavoured probelms forthwith! I'm burning incense and candles like mad at the moment.........but we're only at the beginning of it all.....(yes, the litter is similiar to what they were using at Lort Smith) We've come to an excellent compromise when it comes to me doing my calligraphy/illumination. he sits on my shoulder like a tiny furry parrot, and watches. He drank some black paint the other day before I could stop him.(he can be very, very fast when he wants to be!) Luckily, it's non-toxic. And dinner time is just hopeless. He becomes an octopus with a lightning fast paw. Oh well, variety is good for them. :-) Thank you to the people that have added in their condolences since I wrote a general thankyou post. (I couldn't really face answering each one individually - I'm sure you'll understand that!) | | Saturday, November 13th, 2004 | | 7:08 am |
Thank you all very very much for your condolences - they were much appreciated. Morca has arrived (yesterday afternoon) and we're bonding. He woke me this morning with lots and lots of kitty-love slurps on my face - right when I would have woken anyway. The huge kitty-poo accident on my doona last night was only a small hitch in our growing friendship........(I swear it was half his body-weight's worth!) Guernesavien (my part-Siamese) is, of course, horrified at the small ball of grey and white fluff. But I know she's just a big softie, coz of how she mourned over Missy as well. (who she never totally forgave for adopting us and moving in, from being feral) I'd been talking to a lady at the vet's before our appointments (as you do), and she later heard me crying. She came into the room just after....... and gave me hugs. She promptly adopted me for the day, and took me to Lort Smith to find a new kitten, which was very very lovely of her. "Morca" is the name of one of her cats - it seemed the right thing to do. so he has two fairy godmothers - Marion - this lady, and LtlPengy (the alternative contact for his microchipping). How lucky can a little cat get? *smiles* V.C. | | Thursday, November 11th, 2004 | | 6:04 pm |
My Missy was put down today. She was just too sick - not responding to the drugs for her Feline Herpes (contracted when she was a feral kitten), and had developed an abcess behind her eye, requiring an operation which would have left her blind in that eye. The vet said that her immune system was wrecked, and that it was the best idea. I'm getting a kitten from Lort Smith Hospital tomorrow - a little boy - he climbed the cage and waved at me until I said I'd take him - a friend took me there after the vet's. so, horrible news and exciting news. I miss my darling so much. | | Wednesday, November 3rd, 2004 | | 7:50 am |
My Calligraphy Exhibition
is next Monday, 8th November - 6 - 7.30pm. It will probably have about 60 pieces of Calligraphy, since it is Units 1 through 4 (the other exhibitions were only 2 Units at a time!) - and we all do multiple folio pieces. Lots and lots to see! It is my last RMIT exhibition. My next exhibition will an 'Art by CFS people' one, in May next year, in Resevoir. The RMIT building entrance is off Cardigan St. At the corner of Cardigan and Victoria Streets there is Dracula's theatre restaurant. Then a car park on Cardigan St. Then the entrance to the building. There will be signs directing you to the room with the exhibition (basically down the front entrance/corridor, turn right and follow the corridor a couple of rooms down) There will be nibbles and soft drink. It would be lovely to see you there! Meges | | Sunday, October 24th, 2004 | | 8:31 am |
This is STOLEN from someone called je_reviens, from a Stitchers LJ. I thought it was cool........ I hope the links come across....if not, still an interesting little factoid. ----- Speaking of rebellious tapestries and needlepoint; Did you know that the "Bayeux tapestry" is full of dirty little pictures on its borders? I noticed that they are not as worked on as the animals, archers and what not that is in most of the border pictures. I suspect that these dirty scenes were done in off moments when no one was looking and then folded over when the boss or whomever came back from lunch or whatever. There are no dirty pictures during the part about the death and burial of King Edward the Confessor on January 1, 1066. Nor are there any dirty pictures during the coronation of King Harold Godwinson on January 6, 1066, near the time of Haley's Comet May 16, 1066. I suspect since the boss would have really looked at these portions. The "Bayeux tapestry" is 230"-9" long and between 18" and 20" wide. It was meant to be displayed in a cathedral. The end of it is missing. I would guess that originally it was about 300 feet long (about the length of a football field). The end of the story should be the coronation of William, Duke of Normandy as the new King of England. I bet during and after the coronation there would have lots of dirty pictures to immortalize the rock band style of partying that must have accompanied the coronation. I think this is possibly why that part of the tapestry is missing, as it might have been too offensive to the sensibilities of those in the cathedral where it was displayed. (As an aside; "The island of Guernsey and the other Channel Islands represent the last remnants of the medieval Dukedom of Normandy") See riddle # 45 for a dirty picture. (EDITED IN http://itsa.ucsf.edu/~snlrc/britannia/flowers/enigmata.html - interesting stuff) Dirty pictures in lower border: one, two, three. (not that eager to do that many copy and pastes....) Dirty pictures in upper border (edited in - http://www.hastings1066.com/pics/tap25.jpg) Chopped up pieces of naked and looted dead knights on lower border. (same pic as the upper border !) Thought I'd write in - haven't for awhile. Nothing much to report - been asleep, been sick. Grocery shopping, occasional visitor. More sleep. More sick. Missed half of the Calligraphy semester, which is now finished, except for one post-Semester lesson, which is delayed coz we're waiting for Vellum to arrive from England (!). Such is life when you move house at the beginning of semester! Oh well. I don't know the date of the exhibition yet. I've finished my pieces - just waiting to afford to buy the backing for two of them. Yay *grin* Otherwise fine. Bored!! |
